Riga

Riga is the capital of Latvia and the biggest city in the Baltic States, in the junction of the Daugava River and Ridzene River. It is the most important industrial centre in the region, with well developed economy. The area of the city has been inhabited since ancient times, by the tribes of Livonian and Finnic. Riga increased its importance when the German traders settled in the region in the 12th Century. The city became a major gateway for the trade between the Baltic tribes and Russia. Riga is rich of historic landmarks, which attract thousands of visitors every year. The impressive Doma Cathedral is the largest church in the region of the Baltic States. It dates from the 13th Century and has a unique organ, installed in the end of the 19th Century. Worth seeing is the majestic Riga Castle, which hosts the Museum of Latvian History, and the Museum of Foreign Art.Attractive for the tourists are the lovely churches, St. Peter’s Church, with its 123 m high tower, and just behind it is erected the tiny 13th Century St. John’s Church. The Powder Tower still reminds of the original city walls and it houses the Latvian Museum of War. In Riga is established the third highest tower in Europe, the Riga Radio and TV Tower. The Domina Shopping Centre is the largest shopping centre in the Baltic States. In Riga is situated the only stationary circus in the region. Downtown there are lots of restaurants, an amusement park and a beer garden.
